Marcelo Daniel Gallardo, born January 18, 1976, is a highly regarded Argentine football manager and former professional player. He's widely celebrated for his exceptionally successful tenure as the manager of River Plate.
Playing Career: As a player, Gallardo was an attacking midfielder known for his technical skill, vision, and ability to score goals. He played for River Plate (three separate spells), Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, and D.C. United, as well as the Argentine national team. He won numerous titles as a player, showcasing his talent and leadership qualities early on.
Managerial Career: Gallardo's managerial career began with Nacional in Uruguay, where he quickly achieved success, winning the Uruguayan Primera División title.
His greatest achievements came during his time at River Plate. He took over in 2014 and transformed the club into a dominant force in South American football. Under his leadership, River Plate won a remarkable 14 titles, including two Copa Libertadores titles (2015, 2018), three Recopa Sudamericana titles, and four Copa Argentina titles. His tactical prowess, ability to develop young players, and strong leadership were crucial to this success.
Gallardo's River Plate team was known for its attacking style of play, high pressing, and tactical flexibility. He implemented innovative strategies and consistently adapted his approach to suit different opponents. His ability to motivate his players and create a strong team spirit were also key factors in River's success. He left River Plate in December 2022.
In May 2023, Gallardo joined Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, marking his first managerial role outside of South America.
